Your Role:
The Laboratory Technician is part of the Operations & Service Group and report to the Animal Health Laboratory Team Leader. This team is responsible for delivering on the promise we make to our customers.
Operations & Service is made up of LIC’s Artificial Breeding, Diagnostics, Farms Management, FarmWise, Field Assist, Heifer Management and Herd Testing teams.
Your role will be responsible for preparing and testing animal samples for the Animal Health Laboratory and/or GeneMark Laboratory and contribute to running a profitable commercial laboratory services business. Alongside this you will assist in maintaining the operation of the laboratory within the required ISO standards, including the maintenance and calibration of the laboratory equipment. You will be required to comply with all Laboratory procedures including all Health and Safety legislation.
Your Key Focus:
- Help implement and maintain ISO 17025 quality standards for all laboratory practices.
- Receive, prepare, analyse and report results for samples accurately and within agreed turn-around targets, using standard laboratory techniques according to Lab SOPs.
- Liaise with other laboratory staff to ensure seamless processing of samples.
- Ensure the laboratory is adequately stocked with consumables and to meet demand without holding excessive inventory levels.
- Operate analytical equipment according to SOPs and safe operating practices.
- Maintain laboratory equipment at an acceptable operational state through defined proactive maintenance and calibration programmes.
- In the event of equipment failure, begin troubleshooting the problem and promptly inform all required parties.
- Operate continuous improvement programmes through the lab to imrove efficiencies and reduce operations costs.
- Assist with development of new test methods when required.
- You may be required to perform the role of Key Technical Person (KTP) under the recognised lab programme within Diagnostics, responsible for authorising test results or reports before release.
Your Skills & Experience:
- Knowledge of biology, biochemistry and/or molecular biology with a tertiary qualification is preferred.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with laboratory processes, procedures, and equipment, with good attention to detail.
- Good analytical and problem solving skills.
- Knowledge and operation experience with ISO 17025 implementation is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with Word Processing, Spreadsheet, LIMS and Database software programs.
