About the role:
This 8 - 9 month contract offers the opportunity to be part of a cutting-edge project as LIC Scientists drive the future of the NZ dairy sector, through breeding programmes to quantify and reduce methane emissions.
As part of the Research and Development group, you'll report to the Senior Scientist – Animal Science. Your role will have responsibility for coordinating all farming, animal husbandry and data collection from lactating dairy cows, whilst they are transitioning to and housed in the methane measurement barn.
- Day to day management of the dairy cows that are transitioning to, and housed in, the methane barn
- To keep the barn to a high standard and in accordance with modern farming practice.
- Work with the Innovation Farm manager, Farms Manager and Farm Veterinarian to maintain cow nutrition, condition and health
- Implement procedures that reduce the risk of accident to both people and animals
- Ensure all staff members working within the barn understand the documented information
- Use databases and spreadsheets to maintain accurate records and monitor animal performance
- Clear communication so all the stakeholders involved with the methane project and the facility are kept informed and updated regularly
- Regular checking and maintenance of the methane project monitoring equipment
We are seeking:
A passionate farmer who is experienced in animal husbandry and is comfortable working with animals, or at the computer. You need to be a clear communicator who is comfortable working with a range of professionals.
Experience operating tractors and a range of implements would be an advantage as would previous experience managing animals in a barn. You must enjoy working as part of a team. A strong attention to detail is a must as you will be responsible for the data collection for the methane project. A tertiary qualification in farm management or animal husbandry would be an advantage as would previous experience working in a research farm environment.
