DR PAT SHANNON SCHOLARSHIP
Named after one of the world's most innovative bovine geneticists and reproductive biologists, this scholarship recognises Dr Shannon's lasting contribution to the dairy sector. After joining LIC in the mid-1950s, he made numerous ground-breaking discoveries that have had a significant impact on the industry. A $10,000 scholarship is awarded each year.

BRIAN ASPIN SCHOLARSHIP
Brian Aspin was a passionate dairy farmer whose 38-year association with LIC spanned a number of roles at the co-operative, including AB Technician, AB Supervisor, Liaison Farmer, and Shareholder Councillor. To honour his contribution to the dairy industry, LIC and Brian's family award a $10,000 scholarship each year.
Graduate Programme
Our Genetics Graduate Programme features a two-year rotational experience designed to provide broad exposure across the business, helping graduates develop both technical expertise and commercial understanding. We typically offer four Genetics Graduate roles, including two positions with a strong research and development focus and two with a more commercial focus. Graduates in other areas of LIC are appointed into dedicated roles aligned to their discipline, with clear development pathways and opportunities for progression.
Internships
Each year LIC welcomes talented students through its Summer Internship Programme to provide meaningful, hands-on experience and the opportunity to contribute to real business outcomes. While the programme has traditionally focused on Genetics and Research & Development, internship opportunities have also been offered in other areas of the business, including Technology. The number of internships varies from year to year, reflecting business priorities and project opportunities while continuing to support the development of future talent.
Apprenticeships
Every year, around 100 aspiring Artificial Breeding Technicians are selected to join LIC's intensive training programme, where they learn industry-leading artificial breeding techniques and develop the skills required for success in the field. Those who successfully complete the programme progress into an apprenticeship, continuing their development through hands-on experience and supported learning.
For many, this marks the beginning of a long and rewarding career helping shape the future of New Zealand dairy farming. Artificial Breeding Technicians play a critical role in delivering genetic gain across the national herd, supporting farmers to breed more productive, efficient, and sustainable cows. Their work contributes to a vital industry that underpins communities, exports, and the broader economy.
